The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion (top photo) dons red, white and blue on Sunday, July 3 for the return of the Star-Spangled Salute. This free Independence Eve spectacular features the Houston Symphony in a selection of patriotic favorites under the direction of Michael Krajewski. This free concert is generously sponsored by The Woodlands Development Company (TWDC). TWDC has been a sponsor of the Star-Spangled Salute since its inception in 1990.
At the concert, the world-renowned Houston Symphony performs a variety of classic American numbers complete with cannons blasting from the top of the hill during Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture".

4th of July Activities in The Woodlands, Texas
Fireworks have become a long-standing tradition for a number of community events in The Woodlands, but due to extreme drought conditions in Montgomery County, The Woodlands Township announced today the cancellation of the July 4, 2011 fireworks show during the community’s 14th Annual Red, Hot & Blue Festival. All other entertainment and activities for the weekend celebration will continue as scheduled, creating a patriotic weekend of fun for the entire family.
This is the first time in The Woodlands 36 years of hosting fireworks that the show had to be cancelled.
“The Woodlands has and always will be committed to public safety, and one of the most valued characteristics of our area is our forest,” said Nick Wolda, president of The Woodlands Convention & Visitors Bureau. “This decision has been made not to chance any loss of our natural beauty and any damage to our residential or commercial properties as a result of the public fireworks display.”
While the fireworks show has been cancelled, Wolda adds there’s plenty for families to look forward to when it comes to celebrating July 4th in The Woodlands.
Now in its 14th year, the annual Red, Hot & Blue Festival, produced by The Woodlands Convention & Visitors Bureau and presented by Ellis & Ellis, will be held Monday, July 4,2011 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Town Green Park and Waterway Square, both located along The Woodlands Waterway®. The festival has become one of the more popular July Fourth celebrations in the region, highlighted by hot dog and watermelon eating contests, live entertainment and more.
Even before July 4th, there are plenty of ways to celebrate America’s independence in The Woodlands.
Stop by Waterway Square on Saturday, July 2 and enjoy live music and strolling entertainment, as the popular series, Waterway Nights at Waterway Square, will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Also on July 2, The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion will host The Music of the Eagles, as presented by the Houston Symphony and a full rock band accompanied by singers Terry Brock, Randy Jackson and John Hines. Gates open at 7 p.m. Mezzanine and lawn seating is free. Orchestra seats are $20 each.
On Sunday, July 3, 2011 gather the family and relax under the stars when the Houston Symphony performs its Star Spangled Salute, a free concert at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion starting at 8 p.m.
Before the Red, Hot & Blue Festival on July 4, 2011 head over to head Market Street - The Woodlands for the South County Fourth of July parade, “Celebrating the American Dream,” which starts at 9 a.m.
After the parade, beat the heat by visiting one of The Woodlands’ 13 pools for Splash Day from noon to 4 p.m.
Later that evening, Northshore Park, located just west of Lake Front Circle on Lake Woodlands Drive, will have the “Things That Go” Parade at 5:30 p.m. Children 14 years and younger are encouraged to bring their patriotically-decorated bike, scooter or wagon and parade around the park. Awards for the most creative entries will be awarded throughout the afternoon. Afterwards, enjoy a free, live music concert from local country band Buck Yeager at Concert in the Park.

Comcast Revs Up in The Woodlands!
Comcast customers with fat wallets and a need for speed can now sign up for Internet access that's faster than many office network connections.
The cable provider this week began selling a 105-megabits-per-second service to residential customers, initially only in The Woodlands. The service will be expanded to adjacent neighborhoods soon, and eventually will be available throughout the Houston area.
Called Extreme 105, the service costs $105 a month for the first 12 months, provided you are using other Comcast services, such as phone or TV. The price goes up to $129.99 after a year. Customers who don't want any other Comcast services will pay $199.95 a month for the Internet access alone. There's also a $249 installation fee.
A Comcast spokesman said the service requires a newer DOCSIS 3.0 modem, and technicians must check a customer's home wiring and computers to ensure they can deliver the speed.
Most Comcast customers have older, DOCSIS 2.0 modems, though the company has been selling a DOCSIS 3.0-based service — Extreme 50 - in Houston for about a year. An 802.11n Wi-Fi router is also included with the service.
As with Comcast's other Internet offerings, Extreme 105 customers are subject to a data transfer cap of 250 gigabytes a month, the spokesman said.
The offering is one of the fastest residential Internet services in the Houston area. Many wired, corporate networks run at 100 Mbps, a technology called Fast Ethernet.
At 105 Mbps, customers would be able to download 4 gigabytes of data - about the size of a high-definition movie - in about five minutes.
By comparison, competitor AT&T's U-verse Internet service has a maximum speed of 24 Mbps at $65 a month. Verizon's FiOS is available in some area suburbs at 50 Mbps for $139.95.

A New Website has been Launched to serve The Woodlands, Texas Community
A brand new website, TheWoodlandsTX.com, has been created to serve The Woodlands community in Texas. Billed as “Facebook for Soccer Moms,” the site promises to deliver local information and social interaction.
Spring, TX (PRWEB) February 21, 2011
A new community website has been launched to cater specifically for residents of The Woodlands, Texas, which is a township home to 90,000 people about 28 miles north of Houston. The company behind the site, Kosmin Media Group, has promised to deliver “Facebook for soccer moms,” with local information and social networking at http://www.thewoodlandstx.com.
TheWoodlandsTX.com boasts interactive forums, personal profiles, and private messaging for friends to keep in touch and to allow community members to network. In addition, the website contains useful local information such as movie show times, restaurants in The Woodlands, The Woodlands jobs, The Woodlands classifieds, and The Woodlands business directory.
The website, which also serves the Spring, Tomball, Magnolia, Conroe, and Shenandoah areas, is gaining popularity fast. More than 35,000 posts have been added to the forums, more than 400 restaurants in The Woodlands have been ranked with just over 209 written reviews, and more than 250,000 users have viewed the site's photos. The Kosmin Media Group is behind other successful websites, such as Atasocita.com and the top-ranked Kingwood.com.
The site has been designed to be simple to navigate and easy to use. One member, Donovan B., said: “TheWoodlandsTX.com is just useful and easy. I always hated trying to figure out how to find my way around the other sites.” Cindy D. added that she enjoyed how she was able to interact with other local people online.
Other site features include The Woodlands jobs board – which already holds one of the top search engine rankings in the area – real estate and rental databases, The Woodlands classifieds, local news, and advice on shopping and entertainment options. The site also contains information crucial to residents, such as links to the township's government, police department, utilities, library, animal shelter, recycling plant and more.
TheWoodlandsTX,com has a mobile version too, with quick links to the message board, private mail, and everything else the site has to offer.
The website is geared towards residents and consumers, but local companies are reaping the benefits too. Besides The Woodlands business directory, TheWoodlandsTX.com offers local companies affordable advertising and marketing options, such as banners, listings, back links, and even contest opportunities.
“I'm glad to see a useful alternative to the other community websites in The Woodlands,” member Jason M said. “TheWoodlandsTX.com is easy to use and I can find what I want without having to hunt for it.”
